NATURAL THERMAL-INSULATING SHEEP’S WOOL MICROCLADDING SYSTEM SANAWOOL SYSTEM®
Supply and installation of a low-thickness insulation system of the SANAWOOL SYSTEM® type or equivalent, consisting of a natural thermal-insulating microcladding with high breathability, suitable for internal and external applications within the scope of green building, energy upgrading and hygrometric remediation works on masonry.
The system must be composed of the following elements:
- insulating panel/mat SANAWOOL, consisting of approximately 99.5% natural sheep’s wool and approximately 0.5% residual vegetable fibres, obtained through mechanical processing without the use of glues, synthetic resins or petrochemical derivatives;
- breathable mineral adhesive/skim coat SANAKOLL, based on natural hydraulic lime, for bonding and the subsequent skim-coating of the system;
- natural jute reinforcement mesh ARMASANA JUTA 105, or glass fibre mesh ARMAGLASS 160, embedded in the skim-coat layer;
- compatible breathable finish consisting of:
– water-repellent siloxane fine render PROTECH SIL I – THERM for external applications;
– mineral potassium silicate paint SANAXIL P – THERM for internal applications.
Performance characteristics of the insulation
The insulating mat must possess the following indicative characteristics:
| Characteristic | Value |
| Composition | ≈ 99.5% natural sheep’s wool |
| Standard density | ≈ 30 kg/m³ |
| Available densities | up to 100 kg/m³ |
| Available thicknesses | 10 mm |
| Thermal conductivity λ | 0.032 ÷ 0.037 W/mK |
| Vapour resistance factor μ | ≈ 1 |
| Hygrometric absorption | up to approximately 33% of its own weight |
| · Operating temperature | · from -60°C to +80°C |
| · Reaction to fire | · Euroclass E |
Required performance
The system must ensure:
- improvement of the thermal insulation performance of the building envelope;
- increase in acoustic comfort through the correction and absorption of sound waves;
- high water vapour permeability and maintenance of the breathability of structures;
- natural regulation of humidity thanks to the hygroscopic properties of sheep’s wool;
- reduction of surface and interstitial condensation phenomena;
- absence of petrochemical components, synthetic glues or artificial fibres within the insulation;
- compatibility with traditional masonry, timber, steel and mixed construction systems;
- high environmental sustainability and recyclability of the natural components.
Substrate preparation
The application surfaces must be checked beforehand and must be:
- compact and mechanically resistant;
- clean and free of dust, oils, efflorescence or loose parts;
- free of active infiltrations;
- sufficiently flat.
Any preliminary biological remediation or consolidation treatments must be carried out using compatible system products such as Consilex Muffa Cleaner, Consilex Muffa Remover and Sanareg, according to the instructions given in the products’ technical data sheets
Installation method
The application must be carried out according to the following cycle:
- preparation and checking of the substrate;
- bonding of the insulating mat SANAWOOL using the mineral adhesive SANAKOLL;
- any levelling and correction of surface discontinuities and unevenness by applying pressure with a spatula or flat blade;
- application of the first skim-coat layer with SANAKOLL;
- insertion and complete embedding of the natural mesh ARMASANA JUTA 105 or ARMAGLASS 160;
- application of the second skim-coat layer SANAKOLL until complete coverage of the mesh is achieved; if necessary, apply a third skim-coat layer of SANAKOLL
- curing of the layers according to the manufacturer’s specifications;
- application of the final finish:
- breathable and water-repellent siloxane fine render PROTECH SIL I – THERM for external applications;
- mineral silicate paint SANAXIL P – THERM for internal applications.
Measurement criteria
Measurement will be carried out in square metres (m²) of the surface actually treated, including:
-
- supply of all materials making up the system;
- ordinary preparation of the substrate;
- bonding of the insulating mat;
- complete reinforced skim coat;
- supply and installation of the jute mesh or glass fibre mesh;
- final finish provided for by the application cycle;
- offcuts, cuts, adjustments, internal service scaffolding and every charge necessary to deliver the work finished to perfect workmanlike standards.
Excluded are any structural restoration works, deep consolidation of the substrate, treatment of rising damp or temporary works not provided for in this article.
